NAMIBIA PHOTO LIBRARY: KAOKOVELD: KUNENE REGION
SERIOUS WARNING TO FOREIGN TOURISTS
A serious word of warning should be levelled travelling "off-road" in the Kunene Region (Kaokoland). Inexperienced foreign tourists should never leave the proclaimed road network. If they travel "off-road" then they should never travel with one vehicle only and they should ask advice from knowledgeable Namibians. They should use appropriate vehicles and equipment with sufficient fuel and water. Tracks outside Namibia's excellent road system are remote and desolate and are in many cases never properly built and are not maintained. Even if travelling on Namibia's well maintained gravel and earth roads, a speed of 90 km/h should never be exceeded.

Himba Women wear an assortment of necklaces, belts and straps, when dressed up for an
important event or ceremony, weigh around 12 kg. Made from leather, iron beads and other
decorations and packed with otjize (a mixture of ochre and butter fat), the ondengura
is worn on the back of the neck. On the head the wear the leather erembe,
the head-dress indicative of a married woman, fixed on top of her elaborate hairstyle of otjize-smeared
plaits. Widows mourning for their husbands remove the erembe. In
the front, worn between the bare breasts, is a large magnificent single shell, a symbol of
fertility.

girls have been initiated as "women", girls trade their lambskin aprons for
sheep or goatskin skirts. The hairstyle is still the one worn during puberty, but the skin
dress and additional beaded strings around her waist indicate that they have been given
the rite of passage to adulthood.

Ovahimba in Otjitanda, Photos taken in 1978: Married men (second
photo to the left) indicate their marital status by wearing turbans of softened skeepskin.
Their long hair is set into a rest. Ash, pieces of bark and sticks are used to fold their
hair into the required shape, which is anointed with aromatic herbs and plants before
covering with the leather cloth. Since this haistyle appeals to insects both as food and
as shelter, the Himba men keep a stick handy, called an okati, to scratch their
heads.
